‘Inspiration does not come from Above’

Photographer Jasja de Wit followed the creation of “Inspiration”, Maïté’s final sculpture. She wrote a beautiful blog about it. Please, enjoy her story and her beautiful photographs.

Maïté and Jasja first met in 2018, and this resulted in a beautiful photo series. “I muster all my courage,” writes Jasja, “and ask her the question that is on my mind: “Can I make a photo-reportage for a personal project?” My heart leaps up when she agrees to my proposal. I can follow the whole process: from wax statue to patinated bronze sculpture. From welding an iron frame, building a statue in clay, making the plaster positives and negatives to casting the bronze sculpture and applying the patina when it is finished. In the months that follow, she calls me regularly. The work progresses, sometimes fast, sometimes slower. Sometimes she enlists help for the heavy lifting, because of her health. She candidly shares her concerns about this. Still, she continues her work… “
